Product Description
Mirena is a T-shaped levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) used for long-acting reversible contraception and the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding. It releases a low dose of levonorgestrel directly into the uterus and provides contraception for up to 8 years.
Uses
• Long-term contraception (up to 8 years)
• Treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia)
• Management of endometriosis
• Management of adenomyosis
• Protection of the uterine lining during hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
How It Works
Mirena releases levonorgestrel directly into the uterus, leading to:
• Thickening of cervical mucus to prevent sperm entry
• Thinning of the uterine lining
• Possible suppression of ovulation
• Reduced menstrual bleeding and cramping
Dosage & Administration
• Inserted by a trained healthcare professional
• Usually inserted during an in-office procedure
• Effective for up to 8 years for contraception
• Effective for up to 5 years for heavy menstrual bleeding
• Can be removed at any time by a healthcare provider
Possible Side Effects
• Irregular bleeding or spotting (especially first 3–6 months)
• Missed periods
• Abdominal or pelvic pain
• Headache
• Ovarian cysts
When Not to Use
• Active pelvic infection
• Unexplained vaginal bleeding
• Known or suspected pregnancy
• Certain uterine abnormalities
• Allergy to levonorgestrel
Precautions
• Regular gynecological follow-up recommended
• Check for signs of infection or device displacement
• Inform doctor about any pelvic pain or unusual bleeding
• Use cautiously in patients with liver disease
Warnings
• Small risk of uterine perforation during insertion
• Device may occasionally expel spontaneously
